Laugh at the Critic

Laugh at the Critic

Our inner critic loves hyperbole and overgeneralizing.

As you become more aware of the statements of your inner critic, you can begin to laugh at the ridiculousness of the statements you hear…and respond with a correction.

For example: That moment your math test comes back with a bad grade on it.

Inner Critic: You are so stupid!

You: Ha! I am in advanced math, I am sooo not stupid. And, this was a pop quiz, there will be another one next week, I’ll be ready.

As you notice the absurd statements your inner critic makes, laugh at that thought, correct it with a fact, and move on. Your inner critic thinks it is motivating you to keep you from failing, but it does so harshly and usually with exaggeration. Laughing at it gives you the power to move forward.
