The Importance of Learning
They say that knowledge is power, but wisdom is understanding. I’d like to take that old adage a step further and add that true wisdom is understanding how to learn the power of your nervous system, to love, heal and understand yourself better.
We can read and study and cram in all the knowledge we can find, but how do we learn the wisdom that’s inside us, governing everything we perceive, think, feel, and do? That’s how powerful your nervous system is — it is literally creating your entire experience of life.
We can’t think our way into balancing our nervous system, because it doesn’t speak thought or logic. The language of the nervous system is sensation and emotion. We can learn so much about how we perceive our environment by just tuning into how we feel. Noticing our sensations when we’re upset or anxious… listening to those feelings without judgement, so we can soothe those old wounds …
Many people claim that they don’t know what they feel. They may describe themselves as extremely rational, or analytical, or detached, when in reality, they may be numb, and existing in a dissociative nervous system state. This is often how the nervous system protects us from painful childhood experiences and trauma, shutting down feelings so you don’t have to experience them again. But those feelings don’t disappear— they mutate into chronic stress, self-sabotage, anxiety, back pain, gut issues, exhaustion, disease… The body holds onto what the brain can’t face.
That’s why learning the language of the nervous system is so transformative. By tuning into how our emotions feel and learning the somatic tools to move those emotions through and release them, we can heal those childhood wounds and balance our nervous system. And when we learn the wisdom that’s inside us, that’s the most powerful knowledge of all.
